How do I become a better engineer, indeed?
Have you ever asked why our friends succeed than you? Why he/she is your manager? It is the same question I asked myself four years ago. And now, I would like to share my answer to those who seek the same response as me.
1. Who am I?
My name is Trong — an engineering manager at Tokoin in Viet Nam. Besides that, I am also a technical advisor for a Fintech startup company. Before joining Tokoin, I am a technical leader/CTO at Autonomous for three years.
2. Why do I share this answer?
It’s actually not an answer. It just some notes I learned from the experts and the gurus. And I was amazed. They have the same formulas.
3. Inspire me:
4. What are the formulas?
1. Time management:
Especially thing I found on these people is time management. They have the same 24 hours as us, but they use it effectively. The tip is only to focus on high activities and stick with it.
Best practice:
- Use the tool to manage your daily tasks. I’m using the ToDo application on both MAC and iOS.
- The book I would recommend for you to read: https://www.amazon.com/Effective-Engineer-Engineering-Disproportionate-Meaningful/dp/0996128107
2. Practice, practice, and practice:
- If you read two links I share above, the most important tip of them is so simple
- Daily practice is essential. Let’s treat the plan and follow it. The more you practice, the more confident you want to do it.
Best practice:
- Let’s create a loop task in the ToDo app.
3. Don’t abandon:
- Your journey has just begun. It will take time and make you stress sometimes. But don’t abandon. The time will make you stronger and better, just like people say No pain, No gain.
Best practice:
- Let’s tell yourself why do you need to do it and record it. For example, for me, I would like to write to a medium blog to improve my writing skills.
- Once you feel tired, let’s take a rest and listen to your record audio.
5. Bonus :)
- I began to write a medium a year ago. For the first time, I only had 2 claps and about 50 views per month in the next 5 months. Currently, I have a post with near 1k claps and more than 700 views per month. My life just begins :)
6. Conclusion:
Life is short. Let’s do what you want.
